Life as a voiceover is unpredictable which I love and loathe..
You just never know what the next job you get is. This brings a huge element of unpredictability when it comes to forecasting how your business works and it’s something I’m always keen to understand more from my fellow Vo artists as to how they manage it. Now I’m a big believer in visualisations and trying to ask the universe which I’m currently listening to the awesome Jen Sincero tell me more about the power of.
Jen is a force to be reckoned with and this is the second book of hers I’ve been reading, I love a bit of self-development and it’s so vital when you are your own boss.
So I’ve started focusing more on the kind of brands and associations I’d like to have in my work, to make me feel authentic. This started after a job I did with Audio Always for the Busy Bees Nursery group. I actually used to live next door to one, so that was the first concidence and it was also somewhere I had considered sending my little one to. When chatting with the client, it was great to really get what they wanted as I was, in essence, talking to myself! Then I got a job for the English Heritage having spent a weekend wandering around one of its castles in awe and once again really felt I knew what I was talking about and then I got booked to voice a couple of Gin adverts and I have a shoe advert this week. Say no more.
So thank you Universe. I know this won’t always be the way, i’ve been recording scripts for car dealers and insurance companies to this week which whilst I know I need and ‘get’ they don’t really get me going. But that is what this job is all about. Being adaptable and being able to take direction even when you don’t drink the gin you are talking about LOL!
However, with Christmas around the corner, I’m now working on my list of potential voiceover jobs if you’re listening.. Some wonderful interior items – such as a new couch or kitchen, a few choice holiday destinations – i’ve been looking at South Africa and Argentina. This is all once I’ve achieved the beach body with that top-notch personal trainer who will come to my house and perform miracles for me, before Chrimbo. I will be intrigued as to whether I can document my life path with these voiceover jobs, i’ll keep you posted!
