Do you remember how you felt when you got your A Level results? Today’s such an important day for so many, and it’s sad to see that there is a potential shortage of places available according to the papers I’ve been reading this morning.
I remember my A-Level results day so clearly, I didn’t do well with my exam revision, fell out with my folks, was grounded, found it hard to retain information and to be honest I often buckled under the pressure. Results day was a pretty significant day for me as I didn’t do very well! I remember having to go through clearing as I hadn’t got the results I needed to do Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. Instead, I was convinced that a new course – the BA (Hons) in Public Relations would still give me access to the radio studio and the kind of journalistic training I wanted to get to fulfil my dream of working on the radio.
To be honest, the course had little to do with radio and I wasn’t able to access the broadcast resources, as they were just for the Broadcast students and I was unable to get a place at the local radio station which was also full of those doing Broadcasting, I did, however, get to work on my Student newspaper.. Instead, I got my degree in Public Relations and moved to London once I’d been travelling to work in PR and for the first few years of my working life in London’s West End, I was having fun in PR. When I decided to continue my dream of working in radio and started on the Hospital radio journey to then work for free for a couple of years at different stations, my PR degree and experience meant I could freelance in PR and still earn a wage. So whilst I’ve often wondered if it was the right move for me to make, it was an enabler and I strongly believe that is what University stands for.
I don’t remember the guidance around how to choose your Uni being that varied when I was looking – there was the prospectus and you visited the place, but that was it.
Over the years working as a voiceover I’ve recorded VR guides taking people around campus and this series of videos I’ve recorded for the University of Southampton working with Fever Design has such a friendly and considerate tone in how it was speaking to its prospective audience – I was really impressed.
To be honest I actually found the whole recording process a bit triggering and some of the considerations it suggested you make when choosing where you went to Uni never occurred to me, I just seemed to try and move as far away from home as possible. Hopefully, this well-thought-out series of guides to Uni life has been helpful to those looking to go to the University of Southampton, and if you’re reading this with someone looking for inspiration on where to go, have a listen:
