How a voiceover can add empathy to your script.

What can you add to the mix as a voiceover during a pandemic?

During lockdown it has been fascinating to see how the pandemic has been reflected in the work I’ve been voicing. The eLearning focus quickly changed to being much more concerned about people’s home workspaces being set up correctly and reminding people of the importance of their mental wellbeing and checking in with clients.

More recently it’s been about alternative ways of work and how best to get the most out of your cycle to work.  The more corporate work I’ve been doing has been discussing the profiteers during the pandemic as I’ve been learning more about the logistics companies behind the pharmaceutical industry and huge growth areas such as 3D printing!

Tone of Voice

Of course, it’s also been a time where the tone of a lot of voiceover work has needed to be even more considered. We need to keep people’s spirits lifted, keep them engaged in new information, make sure they feel supported and that is where my job comes in.

I’ve just recorded a medical demo which ranges from more technical to health and wellbeing as well as the more technical reads and I am looking forward to doing more work in this arena as I think we need to think carefully about the voices we put behind these messages. We want to offer comfort as well as information at a time when the person listening might already be overwhelmed and not able to process the information they need.

As a voiceover, thinking about this at every stage from a corporate piece to an on-hold message is key as you just don’t know what state of mind the person hearing you might be in. In the work I do recording The Fertility Podcast and speaking regularly about challenging topics, I am constantly reminded of how important this is and carry it over into my voiceover work.

I feel that gives me added empathy in the reads I deliver and I know that is why my clients enjoy my work. If you have a project that needs heart as well as a voice, lets talk more.
