What does a voiceover home studio involve?

When I had space to build a booth I wanted something fun and my carpenter pal Joe, set about creating a 3 sided box, with a weighted curtain fashioned to look like an old-fashioned red phone box. Such an iconic piece of our landscape that I’m still in love with it today, even if it has moved house three times. I still rent, so haven’t been able to build the studio of my dreams but I have a brilliantly crafted, piece of woodwork to house my kit. The booth is fitted with acoustic foam and it also has a vocal booth to go soundproof blanket,  which is a firm favourite of my kitten Lola, who is often found nestled inside, once she has finished clawing the carpet tiles around the booth.

Ahh, but what does it sound like, I hear you ask. My mic is the Sontronics Orpheus. I’ve had it for over 6 years and I think it suits my voice down to the ground, obviously, the Seinhesser and Neuman is a favourite for many and they would be lovely to add to my collection.

For now, though, this glorious handbuilt piece of British engineering suits my dulcet tones perfectly and I love how retro it looks.

Have a listen here to my dry studio sample below and if you want me to record a sample of your script, I’ll be more than happy to.

I used a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 preamp and edit using Adobe Audition.
