Why we need to pick up the phone more

Hello… voiceover calling

Old Pals:

I spent the weekend with a group of school pals, we managed to all get together with our gaggle of kids and hang out. It was a lot of fun and as we talked about our lives and juggling work and kids and everything else, it struck me how little we all get to actually talk about everything ( not just due to the speed we were all speaking at ) but also that none of us call each other anymore.

Yes we like pics on facebook and what’s app each other, infact the whole camping trip caused all sorts of confusion as messages were missed on whats app and people’s phones were dropped down toilets, so they were only on facebook!

Phone calls:

I used to love the regular phone calls with my pals yet at the end of the day, once you’ve finished work, put kids to bed, eaten.. .you want to just sit on the couch and binge watch a box set right.. NO life is too short.

I’m out of practice using the phone, which sounds insane but I am, I’m often thinking “Oh I shouldn’t call as they’ll be doing bedtime or they’ll be busy”  but it’s still nice to get a voicemail from a pal to know they’re thinking of you right? Plus how will they know you’re thinking of them if you don’t tell them.So whilst I’m going to start bugging my friends more in the evenings and disrupting their box set watching, I’m also going to improve my phone calls to productions companies and producers.. which as a voiceover is part and parcel of marketing your businesses.

Voiceover marketing:

It’s a constant bugbear of mine but something I know is so vital in my business. So much so, I have daily alarms on my phone that tells me to call my contacts or new leads. Sometimes I do make the calls but often I don’t. I find it uncomfortable but then as soon as they pick up the phone we ALWAYS have a good old chinwag… so what is this ridiculous fear…  Working as a voiceover takes constant marketing and awareness building on social media, on the phone – and it takes a lot of time.  There are always going to be parts of running your own business you don’t like and whilst you can outsource some of them, as a voiceover it doesn’t make sense to have someone else calling people you want to work with on your behalf, as you want them to hear you right.

Plus, all the self-development and motivational coaches will tell you to face your fears every day, and yet I don’t pick up the bloody phone enough, so I’m stating it here, in writing. I will be on the phone more!

I will be bugging my friends and I will be making daily phone calls to my voiceover contacts and if writing this blog post doesn’t’ make me STOP PROCRASTINATING then I will down my mic and shut the f**k up.
